Graph Homomorphisms and Long Range Action

چکیده
We show that if a graph H is k-colorable, then (k−1)-branching walks on H exhibit long range action, in the sense that the position of a token at time 0 constrains the configuration of its descendents arbitrarily far into the future. This long range action property is one of several investigated herein; all are similar in some respects to chromatic number but based on viewing H as the range, instead of the domain, of a graph homomorphism. The properties are based on combinatorial forms of probabilistic concepts from statistical physics, although we argue that they are natural even in a purely graphtheoretic setting. They behave well in many respects, but quite a few fundamental questions remain open. ∗Author’s net address: [email protected] †Author’s net address: [email protected]

Extremal graphs for homomorphisms
The study of graph homomorphisms has a long and distinguished history, with applications in many areas of graph theory. There has been recent interest in counting homomorphisms, and in particular on the question of finding upper bounds for the number of homomorphisms from a graph G into a fixed image graph H. We introduce our techniques by proving that the lex graph has the largest number of ho...
متن کاملColorings and girth of oriented planar graphs
Homomorphisms between graphs are studied as a generalization of colorings and of chromatic number. We investigate here homomorphisms from orienta-tions of undirected planar graphs to graphs (not necessarily planar) containing as few digons as possible. We relate the existence of such homomorphisms to girth and it appears that these questions remain interesting even under large girth assumption ...
متن کاملHomomorphisms on Topological Groups from the Perspective of Bourbaki-boundedness
In this note we study some topological properties of bounded sets and Bourbaki-bounded sets. Also we introduce two types of Bourbaki-bounded homomorphisms on topological groups including, n$-$Bourbaki-bounded homomorphisms and$hspace{1mm}$ B$-$Bourbaki-bounded homomorphisms. We compare them to each other and with the class of continuous homomorphisms. So, two topologies are presented on them a...
